The United Nations Secretary-General will visit Colombia from 23-24 November to mark the fifth anniversary of the signing of the historic 2016 Final Peace Agreement between the Government of Colombia and the former FARC-EP.
Antonio Guterres is scheduled to meet with President Iván Duque Márquez and his government officials, as well as leaders of the former FARC-EP guerrillas. At the same time, the Secretary-General will attend commemorative events and observe peacebuilding and reconciliation efforts involving ex-combatants, communities and authorities. He will meet with heads of the transitional justice system, victims of the armed conflict and leaders of Colombian civil society, including women, youth, indigenous and Afro-Colombian representatives, human rights and climate change activists.
Through this visit, the UN Secretary-General will take stock of the main achievements of the peace process, as well as the remaining challenges, and is expected to convey a strong message for the continued implementation of the Peace Agreement which, despite the setbacks that have occurred, seeks to transform the conditions that have generated the armed conflict, a matter that would bring great benefit to all Colombians.
