A book on the revelations known as the Pandora Papers has been made available to the general public by the Committee for the Abolition of Illegitimate Debts (CADTM).
The 182-page publication edited by Alberto Acosta, Napoleon Santos and Natalia Sierra presents the allegations resulting from the leak of 11.9 million documents, equivalent to 2.94 TB of files.
The Pandora Papers were published on 3 October 2021 by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists involving hundreds of journalists from dozens of media outlets.
The list of people involved is made up of personalities from politics, sport, the jet set, in short people with a lot of money, the ruling elites of the world and their countries.
The long list includes more than 330 politicians from 90 countries. In Latin America, three sitting presidents are involved.
The investigation reveals complex networks for moving money and the use of secret offshore companies to hide wealth in tax havens.
In some cases, tax avoidance and even money laundering schemes have been exposed.
Importantly, many of the transactions included in the documents do not involve any crime, but reveal how prominent and wealthy individuals have legally set up companies to buy property in secret.
The book is made up of articles by various people to analyse the subject in the heat of the moment without anticipating indisputable conclusions.
The aim is “to raise the level of debate and above all to exercise society’s right to know the truth and to exercise its right to scrutinise the powers that be,” say the publishers.
