Gavdos, the southernmost municipality in Europe, responds to the Greek government’s call to sign and ratify the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons TIAN.
By Decision 21/2022, the City Council of the Municipality of Gavdos unanimously decided to:
To approve the signing of the resolution in favour of the Treaty for the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) which states: “The Municipality of Gavdos is gravely concerned about the serious threat posed by nuclear weapons to our societies worldwide. We strongly believe that our citizens have the right to live in a world free of this threat. Any use of nuclear weapons, whether intentional or unintentional, will have devastating and long-lasting consequences for people and the environment. That is why we support the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons and call on our government to ratify it”.
Thus, the municipality of Gavdos becomes the fifth municipality in Greece, after Agios Efstratios, Tilos, Heliopolis and Agios Efstratios, to respond positively to the #SaveTheCity campaign of the organisation World without Wars and Violence. At the same time, it unites more than 300 municipalities internationally in the common effort for the immediate signature and ratification of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons TIAN by all countries of the world. An effort that is gaining momentum as more and more democracies recognise the need to immediately eliminate the risk of conflict involving the use of nuclear weapons and, at the same time, to begin phasing out nuclear weapons.
The anti-nuclear movement is gaining force internationally, as well as in our country, and Greece is firmly on the path to reclaiming a future without fear of a nuclear explosion anywhere in the world.
